'FREIGHT MARKET SPECULATION IN PRACTICE'

What is the meaning of the world SPECULATION? Is it (a case of) business trading in the hope of profit from price(freight) rises/decreases
rather than from ACTUAL BUSINESS EARNINGS? Isn't it ; TO GAMBLE?
NOW, WHAT DOES IT MEAN IN PRACTICE?
-It means, 'one' to take a view that is different from that held by the rest of the market (YOU & ME, HARD WORKING OPERATORS,
SHIPMANAGERS,SHIPBROKERS, CHARTERERS = THE PHYSICAL MARKET ) and act on it with a view to make a profit.
Therefore if, YOUR EMPIRICAL VIEW, (result of your personal experience), is that the freight market is pitiful and you experience a TCT biz for a
48k dwt dely S.E Asia to N.China, say,at usd 5.5k pdpr dop Indonesia spb, 'they' can speculate -creating the false opinion- that the freight market for
this route and size is at usd8k ( through the 'paper market' = Derivatives- FFA's which is based on sentiment and expectations).
Thus, there will be 'sellers' at usd 8k pdpr who will burn their fingers with SPOT POSITIONS and with dissapointment the market will further collapse
as charterers usually withdraw their bids due to the owners high expectations in a negative world trade environment!
A speculator who has gambled on freight market's further plumetting is benefited from creating illusions/false reality, spreading amongst market
professionals (sellers/owners, shipbrokers) false information, as he is to be benefited from the INDEXES plumetting trend (Index trend speculation)
This wagering game is brought in the freight market from 'WALL STREET' boys and is effected via FFA's OTC instrument (very few have real knowledge
how the Freight Forward Agreements work and since they are over the counter there is very little if NO CONTROL at all!
Thus, in the above 'plot', some, very few, earn money from chaos and dissapointment/desperation of the many who bestowed their hopes in
what they read to a report or somebody's opinion.
Contemplate the above 'scenario' for a second. Would a gambler, someone who is adopting a different view from the rest of us with purpose to
profit without materialising actual business profits (necessary to have the hands on the job day in day out) would 'he' wish you to have access to
what the real prevailing MARKET FREIGHT RATES are? Or would ask you to work on PNC basis? To KEEP IT SECRET WHAT YOU FIXED
and especially AT WHAT FREIGHT/HIRE RATE LEVELS???
Would such entity(ies) be objective and ethical in their business contacts? Would they aim to A FREIGHT RATES TRANSPARENT MARKET?
Bear in your mind that in a TRANSPARENT FREIGHT MARKET they cannot gamble!
In a clouded, foggy and confusing or secretive market, whereas you are chained by imposed PNC FIXTURE claused charter party
agreements YOU and ME will loose and the gamblers will win without putting an effort!
